PumasAI has helped establish a new computational laboratory in India focused on artificial intelligence, pharmacometrics and model-informed drug development.
The Dr Ramalingam Sankaran Computational Lab for Quantitative Sciences has been launched at PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, known as PSGIMSR, in Coimbatore, India.
The facility has been developed through a collaboration between PumasAI, the Society of Pharmacometrics and Health Analytics Sciences and PSGIMSR. It is intended to support education, research and computational infrastructure for clinical pharmacology, healthcare data analytics and quantitative sciences.
Computational infrastructure for drug development
The laboratory is powered by a high-performance computing cluster, giving students, researchers and healthcare professionals access to advanced computational resources.
According to PumasAI, the facility will support work in AI-driven drug discovery, predictive health modelling, real-world evidence generation and model-informed drug development.
Model-informed drug development, often referred to as MIDD, uses mathematical and statistical modelling to support decisions across the drug development lifecycle, including dose selection, trial design and regulatory strategy.

He said access to advanced computational resources and modern AI technologies could create opportunities beyond a single institution.

Training the next generation of pharmacometrics researchers
The facility will support research across clinical pharmacology, pharmacometrics, machine learning and healthcare analytics.
Students and researchers are expected to take part in live research projects, industry collaborations and translational research initiatives. The aim is to give participants practical experience applying AI to drug development, clinical data modelling, pharmacometric simulations and population health analytics.
The lab also strengthens the educational foundation of SOPHAS’ AI in Drug Development programme by providing dedicated computational infrastructure for advanced scientific research.
The facility is named in honour of Dr Ramalingam Sankaran, former Dean of PSGIMSR and founding President of SOPHAS, recognising his contribution to quantitative science and computational research in India.

India continues to expand its role in global pharmaceutical innovation through investment in research capacity, technology and life sciences talent.
The new lab adds to this momentum by giving researchers access to computational tools and training for quantitative drug development, a field that increasingly combines clinical pharmacology, statistics, simulation and machine learning.
The US Food and Drug Administration describes pharmacometrics as a science that quantifies drug, disease and trial information to support efficient drug development and regulatory decisions. AI and machine learning are increasingly being explored within this broader quantitative framework.

The Dr Ramalingam Sankaran Computational Lab for Quantitative Sciences was officially inaugurated on 13 July 2026 by Sri L Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee of PSG & Sons’ Charities Trust, alongside leaders from PSGIMSR, SOPHAS and PumasAI.
